Race: Brighton Marathon

Favorite RNRR Session: Saturday Morning Trails

Goal Time: 03:30:00

Finish Time: 03:40:00

Where did you stay?

With my Aunty and Uncle in Worthing

How did you get to the location/race?

We took the boat across as we needed the van for a little road trip post-marathon

Were you running for a cause?

Nope

Why did you decide to enter this race?

Well, my Uncle and Dad signed up to do the race so I thought I would join them for some family run time, however, they both ended up pulling out due to injury and illness.

How was your training? Did you have a coach?

I had a good training block, feeling strong and enjoying most of my sessions (even the intervals!). Beth Rainbow's online training plan kept me accountable for most of my sessions throughout the week ????

How was the race organisation beforehand?

Organisation prior to Brighton was great, my number and kit bag were sent directly to my home address which saved the admin of having to travel into Brighton to collect my race pack the day before.

Did you have a specific race strategy, and if so, did you stick to it or have to adapt during the race?

Well it’s safe to say that my race strategy did not go to plan! Combination of heat, wind, lack of fuel and heading out a little too fast led to me feeling deflated from mile 11/12!

Were there any unexpected challenges you faced during the race?

The long hill all the way out to Rottingdean… and all of the out and backs!!

How did you manage to overcome those challenges?

I have no idea! I was having a constant battle with myself so I do feel proud that I made it across the finish line!

What was the best bit?

The beginning, the energy of everyone at the start was great. Oh and the post-race beer went down a treat!

What was the worst bit?

No comment ????

How were the crowds/supporters?

Great atmosphere throughout which kept me going for sure. I never thought I’d see the day where I didn’t like the smell of a BBQ, however, when you are 22 miles into a marathon it’s probably the last thing you want to be smelling!

What would you do differently next time?

Pace myself to save more energy for the end and have a bigger breakfast!

What advice would you give other runners doing this race?

Prepare yourself for the out and backs, maybe have a weekend in Brighton a few weeks before to familiarise yourself with the route, or plan a route in Jersey which has multiple out and backs.

Would you recommend this race to other runners?

Yes for sure, I am even tempted to have a go at it again next year

How did you celebrate completing your race?

Salty chips, beer and a taste of local champagne!

What's next?

I’ve signed up for Double Top in May however I’m yet to hit the trails post-marathon so let’s see how that one goes.

Any final thoughts?

Brighton was the toughest race that I’ve ever done and when I think about it, it’s actually only my second marathon. Although it was a struggle I have a lot of positives to take away from the experience which will hopefully make me a better runner.
