Race Report: Prague Half Marathon by Ryan O'Shea

2024-04-06

Name: Ryan O’Shea

Race: Prague Half Marathon (Part of the Super Half series)

Favorite RNRR Session: Sunday Road runs (Less painful than the interval sessions)

Goal Time: 01:45:00

Finish Time: 01:56:58 (Slower due to a heat wave)

Where did you stay?

Grandior Hotel - Florenc, Prague

How did you get to the location/race?

Walk / Bus

Were you running for a cause?

Not this time

Why did you decide to enter this race?

This race is part of the Super Half series and I decided randomly to start with this race.

How was your training? Did you have a coach?

My training went well (expect for getting an injury 2 weeks prior to the race). I used ‘Runner’ training plans for the first time.

How was the race organisation beforehand?

It was my first running race out of Jersey/UK so I have nothing to compare it too, only registration was easy going and it was fairly well organised, one thing was there was a biggish cue to get he race number but except from that all good.

Did you have a specific race strategy, and if so, did you stick to it or have to adapt during the race?

I was aiming to run at 4:59/km pace to get my goal time and for the first 10km I was hitting it but the heat got to me (heat wave in Prague) and I was worried about passing out so I decided to skip plan B (complete in 2hrs) and go straight to plan C which was just to complete the race (ended up completing plan B without aiming too)

Were there any unexpected challenges you faced during the race?

I did the Hospice to Hospice half two weeks prior (‘accidentally’ PB’d) but planned it only as a training run (which it was) but I managed to injure my left ankle, I had to strap it up for the Prague race. I researched the last couple of years races and it was generally cold weather but the weekend of the 2024 race turned out to be a heat wave and I heard it was the first ‘summers day’ within April in Prague’s history.

How did you manage to overcome those challenges?

I had to slow my pace down and focus on just finishing the race, which I still did in under 2hrs so I am happy with that.

What was the best bit?

Getting the medal at the end.

What was the worst bit?

The heat.

How were the crowds/supporters?

They were great, it was even better my partner was there too!

What would you do differently next time?

Try no get injured (haha)… I have incorporated more strength and conditioning to my plan this time round.

What advice would you give other runners doing this race?

The race was very busy, be sure to put yourself in the correct pacing pen to start.

Would you recommend this race to other runners?

I would recommend it as part of the Super Half series and definitely if you have not done it before, you only need a long weekend to complete the race and visit the city.

How did you celebrate completing your race?

Took a photo with my medal and went back to the hotel to rest and recover, nothing too exciting as was too tired (think I will plan something better next time).

What's next?

In September I am off to Copenhagen for their half marathon, it will also be my second Super Half’s race.

Any final thoughts?

I can’t wait for my next race and weirdly I am looking forward to the next training block.
